English and Maths

In Maths we are going to be teaching our own classes of Y5/6 as a unit for the first few weeks. There will be no swapping children from teacher to teacher. This means that we are not going to be able to use Power Maths for the start of the year. We will be using the White Rose Scheme for mixed age planning that we followed previously. Children will consolidate objectives taught last year and the learning will be extended with age appropriate objectives. The whole first unit is on Place Value, addition and subtraction then multiplication and division.

Times Tables Olympics will continue in school and will be completed weekly. It is vital the children continue to learn their tables. Don't forget that there are games that they can play at home using Education City and Times Table Rock Stars. The children have individual log-ins.

In English, we teach reading and writing across a range of genres. This term these will include narrative writing linked to character and then newreports and poetry.

This will incorporate a catch-up of grammar as well as topic learning & understanding and the focus on writing skills for Y5 and Y6

Writing will continue to link to topic work, including History,  PSCHE and Science.

Grammar is taught as an integral part of English sessions. Spellings are taught on Monday, practised during the week and are tested on Friday.
