Each English unit is based around a text or collection of texts. Each unit starts with a fiction section and then ends with work on non-fiction, the two being linked by a theme.
Fiction - Stories with familiar settings
This unit uses and picture book, Cottonwool Colin by Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross, and a story with a familiar setting, Sister for Sale by Adrian Bradbury, to explore the themes of family relationships and independence and look at how a character’s feelings can change throughout a story.
Non-Fiction – Explanations
The non-fiction section continues the link of family and relationships with a focus on explanatory text that look at how animals care for the young. Children will explore how families in the animal world are different to families in the human world.
