Children doing maths

How we teach Mathematics

All children follow the National Curriculum 2014 which is broken down to year group specific objectives. The Foundation Stage children follow the Early Year’s Foundation Stage Curriculum which has just two areas for Maths – Number and Shape, Space & Measure. Each year group's objectives are broken down to blocks of teaching which are again broken down into small teachable steps. Mathematics is taught through a daily mathematics lesson which includes elements of fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We follow a mastery approach to teaching and learning, this has number at its core, with a large proportion of time being spent on this area. The mastery approach allows for depth of learning whilst offering support where needed.

We moved to a scheme called 'Power Maths' a few years ago which uses this mastery approach. This year we have implemented their new edition 'Power Maths White Rose Edition'.

A variety of teaching styles continue to be used within school including using practical apparatus, IT programs and mental skills. Skills are built on each year and developed further.

The 'Power Maths' Scheme runs from FS2 to Year 6.

Intent, Implementation and Impact

INTENT

We recognise the significant role that mathematics plays in our lives today, and its role in the wider world. As such, we aim to give our pupils secure foundations to prepare them for their life beyond Whitwell Primary School and also an enjoyment of mathematics that supports them in becoming life-long learners.

As a school we follow the mastery approach and have adopted the ‘Power Maths’ curriculum, which develops mathematical fluency and reasoning. It does this by using approaches which include the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods, as well as bar modelling. Maths at Whitwell Primary is about drawing connections, supporting the thinking process, and instilling comprehensive understanding. We encourage perseverance which, in turn, gives students confidence as they become equipped to solve problems using many different skills.

Our curriculum is organised in a coherent and progressive way through key strands of the mathematics National Curriculum.

IMPLEMENTATION

Maths is taught primarily through the Power Maths Scheme with additional elements using the White Rose Maths programme. The scheme runs from FS2 through to Yr 6 (Maths starts in FS1 through an integrated curriculum). Skills are taught in small steps and consolidated and applied throughout each the lesson. Problem solving and reasoning are integral components of our Maths lessons. Each lesson will begin with fluency questions and then learning will be deepened into applying knowledge through problem solving and reasoning questions. At the end of each lesson the children are asked to reflect on their learning.

IMPACT

We are developing a community of enthusiastic mathematicians who are becoming more confident in taking on risks and applying reasoning skills effectively. Children will feel more confident to discuss and share their thoughts ideas and methodologies with others.

In EYFS the percentage of pupils achieving the Early Learning Goals for Number and Shape, Space and Measures will  be broadly in line with national outcomes. Ensuring that the children are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to make the move into KS1.

In KS1 and KS2, the percentage of pupils making expected progress or better and achieving the National Average will continue to rise.

Ongoing formative assessment throughout lessons, and summative results from termly tests, alongside evidence from learning walks, pupil voice and book looks demonstrate that the majority of our pupils are now more secure in terms of Maths content and using and applying mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures – this all ensures readiness for the next stage of their learning.
