Maths
Autumn 1 topics:
Unit 1 - Place Value within 1,000,000 (1)
This unit builds on children’s work from Year 4 on 4-digit numbers. Many of the models and images used previously will be further extended to include 5-digit numbers, so that children can flexibly work with all numbers to 1,000,000.
In this unit, we will focus primarily on part-whole models and place value counters and grids, as base 10 equipment is not user-friendly for larger numbers. This unit provides the foundation for further working with numbers up to 1,000,000 and develops fluency with place value to support calculating during the year.
Before they start this unit, it is expected that children:
• know that 4-digit whole numbers are made up of 1,000s, 100s, 10s and 1s, and can represent 3- and 4-digit numbers in different ways (for example, on part-whole models and place value grids)
• understand how to write a 4-digit number as a partitioned number sentence and can partition numbers flexibly. For example, they should know that 2,350 = 2,000 + 300 + 50 or 2,350 = 1,000 + 1,300 + 50
Unit 2 - Place Value within 1,000,000 (2)
This unit builds on children’s work in Unit 1, where they explored numbers to 1,000,000 and their representation on place value grids, as well as work on number lines from Year 4.
It also builds on previous experience of comparing, ordering and rounding numbers from lower KS2. This unit provides preparation for using place value grids to add and subtract 5-digit numbers.
Before they start this unit, it is expected that children:
• can recognise 1s, 10s, 100s, 1,000s and 10,000s
• can use a place value grid to the 100,000s
• can recognise and use a number line
• can partition and recombine numbers
Unit 3 - Addition and Subtraction
This unit builds on children’s work in Year 4, where they learnt to add and subtract 4-digit numbers. It will extend their knowledge of addition and subtraction using formal written methods for numbers with up to five digits.
It will give children the opportunity to build confidence with problem solving and to explore efficient methods for addition and subtraction calculations, including those that can be solved mentally.
Before they start this unit, it is expected that children:
• can add and subtract numbers with up to four digits
• are able to solve sum and difference word problems
• have experience of using inverse operations to check calculations
• are able to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000 and 10,000.
