Mathematics – What We’re Learning This Term
As mathematicians, we are building confidence and mastery in key mathematical concepts through Power Maths Year 6 – Book B. This term is all about deepening understanding, solving problems, and applying maths to real-life situations.
What We’ll Cover
Children will explore a range of topics designed to challenge and inspire:
-
Fractions, Decimals & Percentages
Pupils will learn how these three concepts link together, converting between them and applying their knowledge to solve real-world problems like discounts and proportions. -
Ratio and Proportion
We’ll investigate how quantities relate to each other, using ratio to compare and scale recipes, maps, and everyday scenarios. -
Algebra
Children will take their first steps into algebra, learning how to use letters to represent numbers, form expressions, and solve simple equations. -
Measurement & Geometry
Pupils will calculate area, perimeter, and volume, and explore properties of shapes, including angles and symmetry. -
Statistics
We’ll interpret and present data using graphs and charts, developing skills to analyse information critically.
Why This Matters
Maths is more than numbers—it’s about problem-solving, logical thinking, and resilience. These skills help children succeed in school and beyond.
How You Can Support at Home
- Encourage your child to explain their reasoning when solving problems.
- Use everyday opportunities—cooking, shopping, travel—to talk about fractions, measures, and percentages.
- Play maths games or puzzles together to make learning fun.
