Foundation Subjects

Spring Term 1 Topic in Year 2

Science

This term the topic focus is growing seeds and bulbs. As scientists children will investigate the questions:

  • How do plants grow and change over time?
  • What do seeds need to germinate?
  • What is the difference between seeds and bulbs?
  • How tall will the seeds grow?
  • What have we learnt about how a seed germinates?

History

As historians we will be learning about the history of transport and travel.

  • The children will look at a timeline and learn about how transport has changed over time.
  • They will learn about how George Stephenson invented the steam train.
  • They will find out about how cars have changed since they have been invented.
  • The children will learn about the Wright brothers and their invention of the aeroplane.
  • They will then think about the future of transport.

Art

As artists he children will learn about self portraits.

  • They will investigate famous self portraits.
  • They will use collage to create a self portrait.
  • The children will investigate different kinds of sketching pencils.
  • The children will investigate different paints.
  • The children will create their own self portraits using different mediums.

Computing

The children's topic will be all about coding.  They will create a computer program using an algorithm. They will design an algorithm that follows a timed sequence. The children will understand the function of buttons in a program and what different events do. They will debug simple programs.

PSHE

The topic is called keeping safe.

  • They will learn about the issues of safety and responsibility around medicines.
  • They will suggest actions for dealing with unsafe situations including who they could ask for help.
  • They will identify situations in which they'd need to say "yes", "no", "I'll ask" or "I'll tell" to keep themselves and others safe.
  • They will identify who they can talk to if someone touches them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.
  • They will recognise the importance of telling someone they trust about a secret which makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Music

The topic this half term will follow the Sparkyard curriculum.
