Foundation Subjects

Summer Term 1 Topic in Year 2

Science

This term the topic focus is changing materials. As scientists children will investigate the questions:

  • How can I change the shape of an object?
  • What properties allow a material to be changed?
  • Which material is fit for purpose?
  • What can pushes and pulls do?

History

As historians we will be learning about the history of the village of Whitwell.

  • The children will compare photos of Whitwell from the past and present day.
  • They will learn about the importance of wells in Whitwell and the well dressing tradition.
  • They will learn about the famous poet John William Street who was born in Whitwell.
  • The children will go for a walk around the village to identify the key things we have learnt about and imagine the village in the past.

Art

As artists the children will focus on Earth art.

  • They will explore ways of painting rocks.
  • They will make sculptures with sticks and twigs.
  • The children will make animal pictures with leaves.
  • The children will learn how to weave with natural materials.
  • The children will explore ways of making mandalas.
  • They will make a collage using natural materials.

Computing

The children's first topic will be all about effective searching.  Their second topic is all about making music.

PSHE

The topic is called being my best.

  • They will explain the strategies of a learning line and discuss the learning process.
  • They will learn about healthy and unhealthy choices.
  • They will learn about hygiene routines and how germs can be spread around.
  • They will learn about the importance of good dental hygiene.
  • They will name major body parts and describe how food, water and air get into the body.

 

Music

The topic this half term will follow the Sparkyard curriculum.
