The topic this term is called: 'Why didn't the Vikings sink?

It is a History/Science based topic.

The Science focuses on Forces. This is a huge area of study in Y5 and Y6 so this topic will run over both half-terms.

This includes:

  • explaining that unsupported objects fall towards the Earth because of the force of gravity acting between the Earth and the falling object
  • identifying the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces
  • recognising that some mechanisms including levers, pulleys and gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect

It is a topic that works really well in a practical way and so children will develop investigation skills and how to record results.

In History the children will learn about The Vikings.

This includes:

  • Where did the Vikings come from
  • Viking raids and invasion
  • Resistance by Alfred the Great and Athelstan, first king of England
  • Further Viking invasions and Danegeld
  • Viking life in the UK

Here are the knowledge organisers for this term. The knowledge organisers show a brief overview of the topics that we are covering in our science and geography lessons this term.
