Day 3

Day 3 – Pick and Mix

After the sleep deprivation of Monday night, Wednesday morning was like the Mary Celeste – not a sole to be seen.  After some gentle persuasion and the smell of breakfast, the children soon came round.  We were greeted with beans on toast, cereal and jam.  The perfect fuel for a busy day.

We started the day with a tour of a working sweet factory.  We saw the whole process from sugar to sweet and even got a handful to test on the way out.  Clearly, it was popular because the amount of cash being thrown around was a sight to behold.  Obviously, if you are expecting sweets as a gift, I have some terrible news…

After that, we went to see how glass ornaments were made.  We saw the process of creating hand-crafted glass vases from start to finish.  The children loved it.  They asked great questions and one of our superstars won a prize for his knowledge of fibre optics.  We took a trip to the Needles, which are famous landmarks on the island.  We ate our sandwiches with the sun on our backs and the sea breeze in our hair.  A great first half of the day.

After a short coach ride, we arrived at Carisbrook Castle with the anthem, ‘Castle on the Hill’, blaring.  We departed the coach and took in some of the sights.  The children enjoyed some period fancy dress; scaled the castle walls; saw the donkeys; and enjoyed the sun in the castle gardens.

Somehow, we navigated the rush hour traffic home and had a delicious tea of mushroom soup; chicken goujons and herby potatoes; and mini rolls for dessert.  After devouring everything but the plate, it was time for the beach.  Goggles and sand Uggs ready, we headed to the beach and later into the sea.  We had a fantastic time!

On a serious note - I told the children this too - so many members of the public came up to us as staff and commented about how well-behaved, polite and calm your children are.  You should be very proud of them!
