Day 1

We arrived bright and breezy at school after a sleepless night – full of anticipation (that’s just the parents, by all accounts!). We left with spirits high, rocking the ‘I.O.W. Party Bus’ playlist. I’m not sure we have the makings of a class choir – sorry in advance for the school play!

We stopped off at a service station at about 10:30 for a comfort break and a play on the playground. It just goes to show you’re never too old for a rope bridge and a good slide!

Back on the coach and more ‘singing’, we arrived in Portsmouth just in time for lunch. We had sea views, blue skies and not a seagull in sight. Glorious!

After lunch (and a good roll down the hill), we visited the D-Day Museum. We saw amphibious trucks, Sherman tanks, and a landing craft that actually landed at ‘Gold Beach’ in 1944. We heard stories from real soldiers and were able to get a real feel for what it was like for those who lived through it. The highlight though, as you can imagine, was the toilet, which of course we had to trial (a dry run, so to speak!).

The ferry journey, though a little delayed, was otherwise perfect. We had the wind to our backs and the sun blazing down. Who could ask for more?! We touched down on the island at 5:45, then it was back on the bus – and you know what that means…

We made short work of our delicious dinner and found our way to our bedrooms. There was lots of cheering and excitement when they found out who they would be sharing with. That means they’ll all go to bed early and sleep really well… right?!

We hit the beach late today, but that didn’t stop us building sandcastles, playing beach football, digging holes and burying each other. The children had a great evening and came back for showers with sand between their toes and in other places best left to your imagination.

As I write this, the children are showered and ready for bed. A great day all round!
