English

Grammar is taught as part of our daily English lessons.

The children will also be learning to use the reading toolkit to develop their understanding of different texts that they read.

Good readers:

  • Use their background knowledge and experiences.
  • Ask questions
  • Breakdown and repair words using phonic and spelling strategies
  • Clarify meaning of words and phrases
  • Make predictions
  • Use inference to find the true meaning
  • Visualise making a picture in their head
  • Summarise by putting together the key parts.

Practise using the tool kit when reading books at home. Use the e-book library link below:

Autumn 1 - Spelling Overview

Year 5 and 6 Statutory Spellings

Below is the list of words that children in Year 5 and 6 need to be able to read and spell. They should also strive to use these words in their independent writing. These words will be covered over the year and, when undertaking independent writing, children will be reminded of them, and we will talk about how certain ones can be easily included in the writing that we are going to complete.
