AUTUMN 2

Geography - Biomes

As geologists, children will learn about biomes.  We will learn what a biome is, the different types and about teh plants and animals that are found in them.

Science - Properties and uses of materials

As scientists, children will learn to:

  • compare and group together everyday materials on the basis of their properties, including their hardness, [solubility,] transparency, conductivity (electrical and thermal), and response to magnets.
  • give reasons, based on evidence from comparative and fair tests, for the particular uses of everyday materials, including metals, wood and plastic.

DT - Fashion and textiles

As designers, children will:

  • investigate different designs and patterns. 
  • explore ways textiles are joined and decorated
  • design their own piece, based on what they have investigated and explored
  • use sewing techniques to brig their design to life
  • evaulte their work against a set of given criteria
Computing - Spreadsheets

As computer technicians, children will learn:

  • To use formulae within a spreadsheet to convert measurements of length and distance.
  • To use a spreadsheet to model a real-life problem.
  • To use formulae to calculate area and perimeter of shapes.
  • To use a spreadsheet to investigate the probability of the results of throwing many dice.
  • To use spreadsheets to model real-life situations.
  • To use the created spreadsheet to make decisions about these situations.
  • To use the count tool to answer hypotheses about common letters in use.

 

PSHE - Mini Police

As healthy citizens, Year 5 will undertake the Mini Police programme. This is run by Derbyshire Constabulary and include lots of exciting sessions such as: meeting police dogs and learning about their role, a visit from a police car and going into the community to carry out 'police work'
