Summer Term One

Science

In Science this term in Year One we will be continuing and consolidating their learning about who is who in the animal world. We will have our trip to the Butterfly House in the first week of term to support this work. We will name the  five groups we can classify animals in - mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish and continue to learn about their features and how we can tell which group they belong to by looking at how they live, what they look like and their young.

In Year Two we will be learning about Changing Materials. This topic builds on previous learning about choosing materials that are fit for different purposes. We will conduct investigations to find out how to change the shape of an object and what pushes and pulls do to certain materials.

History

In history Year One will be learning about the life and achievements of David Attenborough. We will look at his early life and work at the BBC and how he has numerous animals and plants named after him after discovering new species whilst exploring all over the world.

For Year Two, we are learning about the history of Whitwell. We will start our learning by taking a walk around the village to identify key historically significant parts of the village. We will discuss changes in living memory and beyond living memory and what life would have been like if you lived in Whitwell a long time ago. We will look at and compare photographs and discuss what changes have happened in the village during their lifetime.

Art

Our art this term is a study of the artist Henri Rousseau. We will learn a little about his life and look closely at his style of artwork and try to recreate it using a range of media. We will pay close attention to the bold colours used and his use of plants and animals.
